For most healthy adults, we recommend scheduling a comprehensive health check once a year. However, if you have a family history of chronic illnesses, existing health concerns, or are over the age of 40, your doctor might suggest more frequent visits to ensure any subtle changes in your health are monitored closely.
What exactly is included in a preventative health check?
A standard health check is highly personalised to your age, gender, and medical history. Generally, it includes a review of your medical and family background, a physical examination (such as blood pressure, heart rate, and BMI checks), and discussions about your lifestyle, diet, and mental wellbeing. Depending on your specific needs, your doctor may also organise blood tests, skin cancer checks, or a detailed heart health assessment.
Are health checks covered by Medicare?
Certain age-specific programmes, such as the 40–49-year-old health check and the over-65s annual assessment, are often eligible for Medicare rebates. Heart health checks and specific chronic disease management plans may also be covered. We advise speaking with our reception team when booking to clarify the fees and available rebates for your specific assessment.
How long will the appointment take?
Because health checks are thorough, they typically require a longer appointment than a standard consultation. We usually recommend booking a 30-minute slot. This ensures your doctor has ample time to conduct the necessary examinations, review any previous results, and formulate a personalised health programme for you.
