FAQ
What is a heart health check?
It is a checkup performed by your doctor to help you understand the condition of your heart, so you can keep it healthy and live a long and active life.
What does a heart health check involve?
Your doctor will begin by benchmarking your lifestyle. What you eat, how often you exercise (or would like to), and other details such as your personal and family health history.
Depending on the results of your discussion, a variety of tests can be conducted to assess the health of your heart. Some of them are electrocardiograms, blood tests, echocardiograms (heart ultrasound) and exercise stress tests.
Am I eligible for a free heart health check?
Medicare will cover your heart assessment if:
- You are 45 years or older
- 30 years or older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Have not had a heart attack or stroke
How much can I claim through Medicare?
Most of the above tests will be covered in part or whole by Medicare. Although blood tests are frequently bulk billed, other tests and medical consultations may not be eligible for Medicare rebate.
How often should I have a heart assessment?
It is recommended that you visit your General Practitioner every year for a follow-up. That way you can monitor your progress and make changes to your plan if necessary.
