“The truth is women use contraception not only as a way to prevent unintended pregnancies, but also to improve their health and the health of their families. Increased access to contraception is directly linked to declines in maternal and infant mortality.”

FAQ
Do I need a prescription for birth control NSW?
It depends on the type of contraception you need. An emergency contraceptive pill can be purchased over the counter, however for hormonal forms of contraception, a regular prescription is required.
Can my doctor prescribe birth control over the phone?
Certain types of birth control can be prescribed via online consultation using Telehealth but other kinds of contraception like IUDs need to be inserted by a doctor, thus a clinic visit is necessary.
Which contraceptive protects me against STIs?
STIs are only prevented by using male and female condoms. Even then, they are still not a hundred percent effective. That’s why for your protection, it is advisable to undergo regular sexual health checks.
How long does it take for contraceptives to start working?
As there are many types of birth control, their effectiveness also varies. Implanon and Copper IUDs work immediately but the pill takes about 7 days to start working, during this time it would be best to abstain from any sexual activity or use another form of contraception like condoms.

Oral Contraceptive Pill
If you decide to use oral contraception, you must remember to take a pill each day. There are two kinds of oral contraception and both are very effective if taken correctly. While some pill varieties begin to work on the first day they are taken, others must be taken continuously for seven days before they begin to show results.
Morning After Pill
This is also known as the emergency contraceptive pill. And for best results, it is advisable to take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Avoiding unplanned pregnancy using this method isn’t always guaranteed. That’s why you shouldn’t take it as your primary form of birth control and seek the guidance of your doctor for other suitable options.
Implanon
A contraceptive implant is placed beneath your skin on the inner arm above the elbow, where it slowly distributes progestogen hormone — that helps stop ovulation — for over 3 years. The device must be replaced every 3 years and may be removed earlier if necessary.
IUD Insertion
IntraUterine Device (IUD) was formerly known as coil or loop. Depending on the type, it can remain in the womb for 5 to 10 years. It is a long-lasting, reversible method of contraception.
Some IUDs have hormones that are released gradually in order to prevent pregnancy. And most of the time they are 99% effective. What’s more is that they can also be used to manage heavy periods.
